Hitting A Punch Shot

November Newsletter

Your November 09' newsletter is here, and this month we will be discussing Hitting A Punch Shot.* As the season continues through the fall, you will find yourself hitting approach shots into strong winds. In these conditions you will find it very advantageous to hit a Punch Shot. A Punch Shot is a low-trajectory shot you can keep under stronger winds giving more control with less spin and more roll. Here is an example of how best to use a Punch Shot:

  1. If you are a 7-Iron away in normal, calm weather, use a 4-Iron.
  2. Grip down on the shaft 2 inches.
  3. Position the ball in the middle of your stance, slightly farther back than normal.
  4. Make a 3/4 backswing, then hit down crisply, transferring your weight aggressively to the front foot.
  5. Follow through with your club pointing toward the target, keeping the lead wrist firm and flat.
  6. It should feel as though you are hitting an extra-long chip shot.

More Power

With a little practice, the Punch Shot will take off low and straight, boring through the wind rather than getting caught up in it!

Now go out and play better golf!

"All seasoned players know, or at least have felt, that when you are playing your best, you are much the same as in a state of meditation. You're free of tension and chatter. You are concentrating on one thing. It is the ideal condition for good golf." - Harvey Penick
