Your July newsletter is here, and this month we are discussing putting and how to keep your putts on line.* Our goal will be to keep your eyes still over the putt and on the target line. As we all may have heard, you drive for show but putt for dough, and this technique should help lower your scores.
The accepted wisdom for stroking straight putts is to keep your head still and listen for your ball to go into the cup. However, it is almost impossible to keep your head perfectly still. Also, if you concentrate too much on your head, chances are good you won't be thinking about your stroke length, tempo and speed. A more logical and affective solution is to keep your eyes still. If you keep your eyes on the target line, your hands are far more likely to move the putter in that direction. Try these tips to help keep your eyes still and on the target line:
- Take your normal putting stance.
- Lift your head and fix your eyes on an object far away (like a tree or bush).
- Don't dart your eyes from one object to another, concentrate on one object and fix your site on this.
- Once your eyes are set ("soft"), make a practice stroke without looking at the ball.
- Move your head back to your original address position. Now you are set to keep your eyes still and move your hands and putter on line from start to finish.
- Hit a putt and see if the ball stayed on line toward the target.
- Repeat the process until you are rolling the ball straight and on line.
To effectively lower your scores you need to practice your putting. By consistently practicing the tips and techniques discussed you will ensure you are putting the ball straight which will lead to making more putts. Drive for show putt for dough, these tips will definitely help you win the money!!
Now go out and play better golf!
