Your September 10' Newsletter is here, and this month we will be discussing Correcting Your Slice.* Too many amateur golfers hit their tee shots off to the right. This "slicing" the ball is caused by an "outside-in" club path into impact. The correct path is downswing approach from inside, to along the target line (square at impact), to back inside again. Follow these simple steps and build the correct swing path:

  • Go to a driving range that has the balls with the red stripe drawn around the equator.
  • When practicing, tee the ball up so the stripe is angled, "inside-out" in relation to your target line (the stripe should point to a 12:30 and 6:30 position).
  • Imagine this line extending behind the ball. Then swing the clubhead into the ball along the line.
  • This will feel strange at first, but you must stick with it. Soon you will start to see the ball fly straight to your target, or even have a little draw.

Follow these steps and your swing path will no longer put a clockwise spin on the ball, which is what produces the slice.

"I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.” - Jack Nicklaus
